GIBSON GUITARS

The Gibson guitar stands as one of the best selling guitars in the world. It is a testimony to its innovative creator Orville Gibson. No other company has built a greater variety of instruments, had a greater influence on guitar design, and withstood the test of over 9 decades to remain a major player in the guitar market of today.

Serial Numbers

When trying to date a Gibson guitar, take into consideration the location of the serial numbers. All solid bodies should have their serial number stamped or printed on the back of the headstock. On some guitars there is an oval inset that the serial number is printed in.

Acoustic guitars built before 1960 have an oval label located inside the body with the serial number printed on it. They will at times have the serial number stamped directly on the wood inside the body. Acoustic guitars during the 60's have their serial number imprinted on an orange, oval piece of paper, as well as on the back of the headstock. Newer acoustics have their serial numbers only on the back of the headstock.
