Goldtop McCarty Trem

When you think of guitars in the PRS world that are instantly recognizable, a few come to mind. Paul Smith's pre-factory, dragon inlaid West Street guitar, Howard Leese's Golden Eagle, and this guitar, and David Grissom's '94 McCarty goldtop trem.

David is in fact partly the reason the McCarty exists. Grissom had called Paul in late 1992 requesting a guitar that had the tone of Duane Allman on the Allman Brothers' Live at Fillmore East album. Through suggestions by David Grissom, input from Ted McCarty, and designs that PRS had in place, the McCarty model went into production in 1994.

The goldtop was originally built for Robben Ford but shortly ended up in Dave's hands. He owned the McCarty for 14 years, As referenced from a letter of authenticity from Dave, which included in the glovebox, the guitar was David Grissom's #1 from 1994 through 2006, and was used on every gig and recording of his during this period of time. With the advent of the PRS DGT in 2007, Dave decided to retire his #1 and throw his full support behind the new PRS model.

Finding a trem on a McCarty, especially one this early, is a tough thing to do. They were essentially produced with a stop tailpiece up until 2007 with the release of the PRS David Grissom Trem (DGT), and a very small run of McCartys done for a dealer.

The guitar recently had a stay at the PRS archives and was on display for Experience 2012.

The guitar is configured with McCarty treble and bass pickups, 3-way switch, volume & tone controls with a push-pull on the tone, Sperzel locking tuners which were installed by Robben Ford, PRS trem, and a rosewood fretboard with moon inlays.

Whether it's the strings, or the construction of the guitar, the instrument is extremely resonant and has tone to die for! The guitar is displayed here for show and tell purposes only, and is currently not for sale.
