Default Spalted Warhorse SC58 Goes Wild at The Wild West !!!!

Greetings from The Dusty Plains of The Wild West!
Yee-haaw! The Spalted Warhorse SC58 rides high
under the gray-and-tan Riverside sky! She's
Crankenstein's Monster, with a doubly maple attack -
topper and back - forged like a magnificent maplike
tapesty of The Wild West plains long before
    The Industrial Revolution.
Her sleek ebony fretboard and figured mahogany
neck make for an unforgettable six-string rock n'
roll journey into the night. Tons of Punch and
Crunch - 408 styley, with woody single-coil action
at the flip of her tiny switches.

So on these spalted tops where they list 'natural stain' are they actually applying a stain (color) to the wood? I'm curious...

I love the look of spalted tops. That is just beautiful. Wish I could.

I asked Paul Miles (PS supremo) at a PRS bash a while back. He said the spalted tops have to be soaked in glue to stabilize them. They can apply a suble tint to the glue but cannot apply a traditional stain to the wood. This explains why almost all the spalts you see are natural (or very close).

Its a shame really, could you imagine a stunning top like that with a dragons breath stain job ?

I'm a spalted maple fan and I cringe every time I see any stain applied to that gorgeous wood. Yes, they do have to soak it in a hardening resin as the wood is very soft (it's rotted wood afterall and can have spongey spots to it).

I have seen it stained, but it looks so much better natural so you can see all of the contrasts, etc. It's nice to see PRS putting out more spalted tops now, but it's a shame they're so expensive. It's only a $300 or so upcharge at other
manufacturers like Carvin and Brian Moore, and most boutique builders will only charge you a similar upcharge for a
spalted top. Gadow built me a beauty for a minimal upcharge.
